Hi and welcome to the dog nail
clippers site. I’ll be getting into the details about clippers below but before
I do I would like to share something that outraged me when I watched it.
It’s
not at all about dog nail clippers but I think people need to know this. If
you’re not interested then just skip it and continue reading below.
It’s vital to your dog’s health
that you trim its nails regularly. Some dogs that spend a lot of time on hard surfaces
will have slow growing nails while others, who spend most their time outdoors
on softer surfaces will grow their nails faster.
In either case, sooner or
later, your dog’s nails will have grown too long and you need to use a pair of
dog nail clippers. If you let the nails grow too long, pretty bad things can
happen:
- The dog could develop an irregular walk, which, in the long run, could lead to skeletal damage
- The nails could break which can cause infection
- The nails can start growing back into the paw which will be incredibly painful for your dog
- The dog could pierce your furniture and scratch your skin with its long nail
Now, there are quite a few
different dog nail clippers to choose from and its far from obvious which type
of clipper is the best choice. Several factors come into play when you make the
decision:
- How good you are at trimming dog nails
- Your personal preference
- The amount of cash you might be ready to use on a pair of dog nail clippers
Having said this, here comes
the overview of the different types of dog nail clippers that are available:
Dremel style dog nail clippers:
Dremels are actually grinders, not clippers but they are a great choice.
There effective and very safe. It’s much easier to avoid cutting the quick with
dremels than with the other products.
You simply grind down your dog’s nails in stages without risk. There are cordless dremels available and that’s what I’d recommend. Here an instructional video on how to use a dremel.

I would recommend is the Dremel
7300-PT. It’s a great dremel. First, its cordless which makes everything
easier. It’s really convenient to be able to grind down your dog’s nails in
stages and its really easy to avoid cutting the quick.
If i was to say one bad thing
about this product it would be that the floor gets a little messy when you
grind the dog’s nails but that’s not specific to this dremel or actually to any
dog nail clippers for that matter. It really is a great product.
scissors style dog nail
clipper: If you have a small dog that doesn’t have very thick nails,
scissors can be a good alternative. As you can see from the image, they work
just like ordinary scissors, however the blade is curved instead of straight,
to accommodate for the roundness of a dog’s nail.
One big advantage with scissors is that they’re cheap. On the downside, sooner or later the blades become dull and you’ll have to get a new pair. Hersey a video on someone using scissors to cut their dogs nails.

One pair of scissors that have
gotten great reviews is the U Groom Small Pet Straight Nail Scissors. You can
see how it looks in the picture above. Notice that the grips are rubberized and
there are finger rests for greater control and comfort. The blades are thin and
sharp so that you can cut with precision.
